In-chair vs Take-Home Teeth Whitening

With all the different teeth whitening products and options available now, it’s hard to choose which one is most suitable for you. We’ll go through the two most common ways to get brighter, whiter teeth!

What’s The Difference Between In-Chair & Home Teeth Whitening?

At Chomp Dental, we offer both express in-chair teeth whitening, as well as DIY take-home teeth whitening products. In-chair whitening usually takes 1-1.5 hours and is performed by a qualified dentist using a TGA-approved high-strength whitening gel. This is the perfect solution for someone who is after a few shades whiter teeth but is short of time.

On the flip side, take-home teeth whitening involves wearing some custom-fitting whitening trays filled with a lower-concentration whitening gel for about 30-45 minutes a day. It generally takes 4-5 applications to obtain a similar outcome to the in-chair alternative.

Why Consider Take-Home Teeth Whitening

Cost:

Take-home teeth whitening is more cost-effective. It generally costs 40% less than a single session of in-office. You’ll get whiter teeth for what you pay.

Convenience:

Do it when you want, where you want, for as many sessions as you would like.

Predictable and long-lasting results:

With take-home teeth whitening, you have more control over how white your teeth get, and results tend to be more stable.

Less Sensitivity:

Generally, lower-strength whitening products mean less pain and ‘zingers’ during and after your whitening procedure. Your teeth are also less sensitive to the cold in between treatments.

What about teeth whitening kits that are available online?

Although they may seem like a cheaper alternative, you never really know what you will get. For the safety of your teeth and gums, we recommend getting it done by professionals or getting your whitening kit from an accredited dentist.

During our whitening consultations with our patients, a qualified dentist will assess all the teeth being whitened to ensure that it is safe to do so. They will also identify some stains/discolourations that will not whiten, such as those caused by tetracycline and existing fillings or crowns.

It is also recommended to get a comprehensive dentist check, scale and polish prior. Find out if you are eligible for a FREE check-up and clean here!

Dentists have access to stronger whitening products containing higher concentrations of the active ingredient, usually hydrogen or carbamide peroxide. In addition, all products supplied by registered Australian dentists are regulated by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), ensuring they are safe and do what they say they do. Plus, if an unexpected complication does arise, you’ll be covered by our professional indemnity insurance.

Dentists can also offer custom-made whitening trays without gooey moulds. At Chomp Dental, we use cutting-edge 3D scanning technology to create perfectly fitting trays, which means less gel wastage, less excess on the gums (potentially causing irritation) and a more comfortable whitening experience.
